Key facts about soft fabric

Soft is a smooth, well-draping fabric with a "silky" effect. Composition: polyester, sometimes with elastane. 4 types: classic smooth, velour, printed, plush. Uses: wedding dresses, evening wear, interior textiles (curtains, bedspreads, cushions). Wholesale at Inter Tex.

The word "soft" in textiles is not a single specific fabric but a whole family of materials sharing one common feature — softness to touch. In bridal sewing, soft is used as a draping base for dresses; in interiors, as a versatile fabric for curtains, bedspreads, upholstery.

What soft fabric is technically

Quick answer

Soft is a polyester fabric with special weaving and additional chemical treatment that makes it gentle, smooth and drapy. Has a silky texture, doesn't crease, doesn't release dye, washes well. Suits both bridal dresses and interior textiles.

Production: polyester fibres are spun into very fine yarns, woven with twill or sateen weave, then treated with special softeners. The result is a material visually similar to crepe de chine or silk, but cheaper to produce and easier to care for.

4 types of soft fabric

1. Classic soft (smooth)

The most common type. Smooth matte surface, soft drape. Suits everyday and bridal dresses, curtains, bedspreads. Density 80-180 g/m².

2. Velour soft (Soft Velour)

With short pile — resembles velvet or velour but much lighter. Warm texture, perfect for winter bridal capes and interior bedspreads.

3. Printed soft (Soft Print)

Classic soft with printed pattern — flowers, ornaments, abstracts. Often used for curtains, bedding, kids' clothing.

4. Plush soft (Soft Plush)

The softest variant — with long pile, similar to plush. Not for bridal sewing, but ideal for interior cushions, kids' toys, throws.

Soft in wedding dresses: where it's used

  • Mermaid skirt — soft drape on the figure
  • A-line — airy lower part of the dress
  • Capes and boleros — especially velour soft
  • Lining — universal base for lace and chiffon
  • Train — dramatic train with optimal price/quality balance

Master tip: soft is ideal for first attempts and the budget segment. Looks expensive, behaves well, sews easily. For premium dresses go for silk or crepe de chine.

Soft in interiors

In interior design, soft has become a universal fabric: curtains with beautiful drape, bedspreads with soft texture, decorative cushions, upholstery. Choose 180-220 g/m² for furniture and 100-140 g/m² for curtains.

How to sew with soft: 5 tips

  1. Cut following the grain direction — soft "breathes" one way.
  2. Use fine needles 70-80 for machine sewing.
  3. Use polyester threads in matching colour.
  4. Stitch zigzag on edges — soft can fray.
  5. Iron from the wrong side on low temperature.

Common mistake: ironing soft on high temperature. Polyester melts above 150 °C. Always set the iron to "synthetic".

Care for soft items

Care rules: machine wash 30-40 °C, delicate cycle, no high-spin. Dry on hangers. Iron from the wrong side on low or through gauze. No bleach — it discolours polyester.

Soft fabric compared to other materials

Soft fabric is a variety of knitted fabric — polyester or viscose — with a gentle pile on both sides (a "two-sided fleece" effect). Unlike satin, it does not shine or slip, making it suitable for everyday and casual evening looks. Compared to regular jersey, soft fabric is significantly softer to the touch and does not snag on nails or jewellery — crucial for dresses with long sleeves or a fitted silhouette.

Viscose soft creates beautiful fluid drape but is less abrasion-resistant; polyester soft is durable and retains shape through repeated washing.

Where soft fabric is used: practical examples

"Comfortable chic" evening dresses: straight cut or bias cut — soft fabric gives a beautiful fit without rigid lining. Childrenswear: hypoallergenic properties and no stiff seams. Home textiles: throws, cushions, blankets. For bridal use, soft fabric appears in a niche segment: second dress for the reception or a casual-style bridal suit. It pairs with a smooth cupro or polyamide lining to prevent drag during movement.

Soft fabric for childrenswear and home textiles

In childrenswear, soft fabric is one of the most popular materials: it does not irritate skin, does not static-charge when pulled over a child's head and machine washes at 40°C without losing shape. For pyjamas, bodysuits and loungewear, a viscose version is preferable to polyester: less "sweaty" during cool nights. In home textiles (throws, blankets, cushion covers), soft fabric competes with fleece: at similar softness, it is thinner and pills less during use. For throws, choose fabric 180–240 cm wide to minimise seam count.

When sewing soft fabric, use a ballpoint needle size 70–80 and a stitch length of 3–3.5 mm — this prevents skipped stitches and fabric distortion. Seam allowances can be pressed open with a cool iron through a pressing cloth; direct heat flattens the pile. Soft fabric is machine-washable at 40°C; tumble-dry on low or air-dry flat to maintain loft and texture.
